The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktopenvironment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

MATE is composed of a number of applications. The renaming is necessary toavoid conflicts with GNOME components.
Caja
Caja is the official file manager for the MATE desktop. It allows for browsingdirectories, as well as previewing files and launching applications associatedwith them. It is also responsible for handling the icons on the MATE desktop.It works on local and remote filesystems. Caja is a fork of Nautilus.
Pluma
Pluma is a text editor which supports most standard editor features. It alsoextends this basic functionality with other features not usually found insimple text editors. Pluma is a graphical application which supports editingmultiple text files in one window (known sometimes as tabs or MDI). Pluma fullysupports international text through its use of the Unicode UTF-8 encoding inedited files. Its core feature set includes syntax highlighting of source code,auto indentation, and printing support (with print preview). Pluma is a fork of Gedit.
Eye of MATE
eom or the Eye of MATE is a simple graphics viewer for the MATE desktop whichuses the gdk-pixbuf library. It can deal with large images, and can zoom andscroll with constant memory usage. Its goals are simplicity and standardscompliance. Eye of MATE is a fork of Eye of GNOME.
Atril
Atril is a simple multi-page document viewer. It can display and printPostScript (PS), Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), DJVU, DVI, XPS and PortableDocument Format (PDF) files. When supported by the document, it also allowssearching for text, copying text to the clipboard, hypertext navigation, andtable-of-contents bookmarks. Atril is a fork of Evince.
Engrampa

MATE Terminal
MATE Terminal is a terminal emulation application that you can use to access aUNIX shell in the MATE environment. With it, you can run any application thatis designed to run on VT102, VT220, and xterm terminals. MATE Terminal also hasthe ability to use multiple terminals in a single window (tabs) and supportsmanagement of different configurations (profiles). MATE Terminal is a fork ofGNOME Terminal.
Where does the name come from?
The name “MATE”, pronounced Ma-Tay, comes from yerba maté, a species of holly native tosubtropical South America. Its leaves contain caffeine and are used to makeinfusions and a beverage called mate.

Vim is an updated version of the early Unix text editor vi (for “visual”). It provides many extensions over plain vi. On Rivanna, the

Emacs
Emacs is another well-known Unix text editor.Like vim, it is largely operated through the keyboard. It can run a compilerand debugger so has some of the capabilities of an IDE. An introduction can be found here.
Nano
Nano is a simplified version of Emacs. It iseasy to use and mostly self-explanatory. An introduction is available at itshomepage.
Pluma
Pluma is a simple WYSIWYG text editor provided by the MATE desktop. It is avariant of gedit and we provide an alias to it, so either name should work.It is very similar to Notepad++ on Windows and can do syntax coloring.
An Integrated Development Environment (IDE) provides more features than atext editor. They are nearly all graphical in nature and so must be usedthrough a graphics-capable frontend. On Rivanna we recommend using themvia FastX.
Geany
Geany is a lightweight IDE. In some respects it isintermediate between a text editor such as pluma and a full-featured IDE. It is capable of managing building C/C++/Fortran programs, including through make. It provides syntax coloring for many languages other than the three compiled languages. Code::Blocks
Code::Blocks is a more powerful IDE for C/C++ andFortran. It assumes that each coding project is in a separate folder. Itmanages compiling and can be utilized with the
